Inspiring POSitivity in the Workplace

The dynamics of the modern workplace are ever-evolving. POS’s Managing Director, Rory Inglis, delves into his perspective on contemporary offices and strategies to bolster employee engagement and productivity.

What is an office for in the work landscape of today?

Rory believes its purpose is simple - to help people be outstanding. It’s about fostering an environment that inspires, energises, and brings a sense of safety and joy. At POS, we always strive to understand our client's purpose, values, and employees' needs at the start of our projects. This knowledge shapes our design approach, creating unique workspaces that facilitate social interactions, crucial in an era of flexible working.

The traditional office structure has undergone a paradigm shift over recent years. Businesses are now re-evaluating their space, moving away from the idea that every task requires a personal desk. More value is placed on resources that foster diverse work outcomes and create spaces for relaxation, fun, and connection.

The workplace environment impacts employee experience significantly. We believe that when people are inspired, they accomplish inspiring things. Hence, our core mission is to create uplifting spaces that offer an exceptional employee experience. This is where design principles and the International WELL Building Institute's rating system come into play, focusing on human health and wellness through factors such as air quality, light, fitness, and comfort.

It's essential to note that a good design isn't just about aesthetics. It needs to provide a comfortable and enriching experience. For instance, noise interruptions can significantly affect productivity, and open-plan workplaces need to be designed with acoustics in mind to minimise distractions. Our design process focuses on creating spaces that support the working patterns of the business and promote health and well-being.

What sets POS's design approach apart?

Traditionally, office designs incorporated a desk for each employee, a few purpose-built meeting rooms, a reception, and a small kitchen space. Our approach digs deeper into what people need and value, using these insights to guide our team and clients towards crafting truly remarkable workplaces. While desks and quiet spaces remain necessary, we help clients conceptualise better space utilisation and invest in enhancing their employees' experience.

The design process at POS encourages early interaction with clients to understand their requirements and work environments. This informed, vision-led approach is time and cost-effective and ensures better results. We encourage businesses to reconsider the focus on desks for everyone and engage their employees in the design process for a smoother transition and greater acceptance. This approach enables us to develop a vision for the space, create 2D and 3D design concepts, layouts, and mood boards that depict possibilities, and manage the fit-out to completion in collaboration with our extensive network of local and international suppliers.

The most rewarding part of the project?

There's no better reward in our line of work than witnessing the moment our clients step into their new space for the first time. It's a poignant milestone, the tangible culmination of a vision brought to life, born out of collaborative efforts, strategic planning, and shared dreams. As they walk through the premises, you can feel their sense of pride, their excitement. Their faces light up as they take in the details, the features that were once mere drawings and ideas. This emotional connection, the palpable energy, is truly infectious.

This is the moment that defines the success of our journey together, from the first meeting, through the design process, to the final reveal. It’s a validation of our shared effort and determination and an affirmation of our commitment to creating inspiring, functional, and unique workspaces. There's immense satisfaction in knowing that we have not just delivered a physical space but an environment that will cultivate productivity, inspire creativity and foster a sense of well-being for those who inhabit it every day. And ultimately, it is this moment of joy, realisation, and of renewed purpose that drives us to continue what we do at POS.
