Hooray for Clerkenwell Design Week

What is Clerkenwell Design Week you ask? It is a highly regarded design festival now in its ninth year and once again offering street spectacles, discussions, open studios, installations and workshops.

According to the British Institute of Interior Design, Clerkenwell is home to more creative businesses and architects per square mile than anywhere else on the planet, making it truly one of the most important design hubs in the world. In 2017, the design community flocked to Clerkenwell with 34,128 attendees and over 300 exhibiting brands which made it the perfect reason for POS to attend again this year.

We had the chance to visit our key suppliers to see the new products they have on offer and to be able to see them in the flesh before they arrive at our new purpose-built showroom in June. 

There was a strong emphasis on sustainable product design this year including one supplier using recycled plastic bottles to make beautiful hanging acoustic panels which we thought was cool! Who knew office acoustics could be beautiful and sustainable at the same time.

Along with a noticeable trend for sustainable products we saw a lot of resimercial style products. What on earth does that mean I hear you say? Resimercial is more than just a trend. To be able to keep your staff on-board, engaged and performing at their best, employers and designers are going to have to meet these expectations. For many, that means it’s time to get familiar with resimercial design.

The main goal behind resimercial design and resimercial furnishing is to make the workspace a welcoming, comfortable place to spend time, something that employees are increasingly demanding in offices. From an employer point of view, making the office comfortable and fun to be in has the added benefit of incentivizing employees to spend more time and be more engaged while at work.

Beyond those benefits, powerhouse companies including Microsoft. Google, Uber, and Yelp are investing in resimerical design to increase employee retention, productivity, and creativity — and it’s actually working!
