Having worked with Jumpman since 2016, when POS transformed their offices in St Peter Port, we were delighted to be asked to help them identify, design and fit out a new and much larger office in the summer of 2018.
The brief in 2018 was simple – 'Build us the coolest office in Guernsey!'
Based on our familiarity with the business, its people and working patterns, we were able to help Jumpman to evaluate a variety of available office spaces. Eventually, Jumpman decided that Albert House would be the ideal location for their new home. The pre-existing open plan space provided a blank canvas to design the perfect working environment.
The result would be a highly contemporary, agile workplace primed to inspire, attract and retain the best talent.
With their planned expansion from 16 to 50 staff, it was important to introduce new concepts to support more productive and healthy working practices. Our design maintained an open plan area for focused work whilst also introducing spaces to facilitate collaboration and relaxation. In addition, we designed these areas to make the best use of natural light on the eastern side of the office.
We ensured that Jumpmans's branding was maintained, relocating and adding to existing furniture with similar styles and aesthetics to develop a contemporary setting, using Mikomax benching, task seating, lockers and space-saving #Hush meeting pods.
Many businesses know the benefits of encouraging staff to take short breaks from their desks. We know that focusing on mindfulness, restorative tasks or playing games, such as chess or pool, results in better brain function, improved memory and cognitive abilities, strategic thinking and attention span.
In the heart of the office, we created a 'Contemplation Zone' to encourage staff to take short time-outs and focus on their wellbeing. This was fabricated in our workshop, incorporating painted metal tubing, wooden shelving and bespoke plant features, and furnished with comfortable soft seating from Max Furniture and Ocee Design.
Adjacent to the Contemplation Zone, we built a large glass boardroom featuring a Deploy meeting table and Coza chairs from Boss Design. We fitted the room with controllable LED lighting and Autex acoustic panels to provide a calm ambience while encouraging space for collaboration and idea generation.
A vital part of the design was to create a fun breakout space for staff and visitors to relax, eat, socialise and collaborate. The aim was to facilitate 'super experiences' that would give people a sense of excitement or achievement and help develop greater team chemistry and identity.
We enclosed the space with glass partitioning on one side and Greenwall and reclaimed timber feature walls on the other. In addition, we installed new Milliken LVT polished concrete flooring to add to this contemporary feel. A central feature of the space was a bespoke kitchen and bar that we manufactured in our workshop, featuring polished plaster and a Copper resin bar top, with integrated appliances including a Quooker hot tap.
The heart of the breakout space features a large Centro poseur table and stools from Connection, allowing people to eat or informally meet and collaborate. The games area features pool and foosball tables, a darts board and arcade machines, encouraging opportunities for interaction and socialising.
We also installed mechanical and electrical services, including Sonos speakers, throughout the space, which are zoned to play different background music to reflect the different environments.
To manage any increased noise levels, we installed Autex 3D wall and ceiling panels to soften reverberation.
The project completely nailed the brief. The positive feedback from visitors and staff reflects the upward direction in which this young, vibrant and fast-paced team is heading. In an industry that is constantly evolving, the office space is an excellent platform to inspire, attract and retain the best talent.
Creating a great environment and positive first impression, the office sets the tone for productivity, inspiring positive meetings or, as Jumpman puts it, 'energising meetings like a strong cup of coffee'.
With agility at the heart of the design, the team is enjoying the advantages of versatile meeting and working spaces that are a true extension of the office culture. From monthly team meetings in the open-plan presentation area to games nights and nail painting in some of the smaller meeting pods, it's clear the team now benefits from a fun and vibrant space to work, take time out and interact with others.
In addition to its impressive look and feel, the space has helped to generate a notable productivity bounce. As well as a reported 100% uplift in employee engagement that comes with facilitating opportunities to collaborate and interact, 50% of the staff actively choose to head to the office even on Work-From-Home (WFH) days.
Jumpman Gaming Managing Director Kris Kukula said: 'The response from staff has been very positive, and everyone enjoys working in a very friendly and modern environment. I still remember the look on everyone's faces when we first moved in – that's a very happy memory.
'Visitors always comment positively too; many people don't realise that an office can look like this, and we've found that such an inspiring environment makes for more productive meetings.
'The open plan presentation area is probably one of our most used spaces; that's where we do our monthly companywide Mission Control presentations. It also doubles as a social space; we have a Nintendo Switch console in there, and we do cinema movie nights. But I'd also give a shout-out to the kitchen and bar area. That's very, very popular during lunch times and social events. It's a very fun and vibrant space where we see people mingling and interacting.'
From the relaxing Contemplation Zone, super-experience breakout area and flexible meeting spaces to the pick and mix 'sweet shop' and boardroom beanbags, we're proud to have helped Jumpman create the 'coolest office in Guernsey'.
